In an annual tradition inaugurated sometime during the 1950s, the Cal marching band pays a visit to the San Francisco Chronicle’s newsroom during the week of The Big Game, when the California Golden Bears of the University of California, Berkeley and the Stanford Cardinal football team of Stanford University lock horns in the tenth longest rivalry in NCAA Division I FBS football, dating back to 1892. This photo was taken in 1961.
Election Night (November 2nd) 1948, during a tense-filled night in the Chronicle newsroom. Harry Truman holds a narrow lead over his heavily favored Republican opponent, Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York. Fortunately for the copy desk, there are no screaming ``Dewey Defeats Truman'' headlines to be found. The Chronicle staffer parked in the lower left with curly hair and a pipe in his mouth is Bill German, who was the paper's executive editor for many years. He’s now editor emeritus.
Catherine Bigelow, the Chronicle's society columnist (from 2007) reads copy in what may look like a disheveled desk with no rhyme or reason is in reality merely organized chaos, much like many newsroom desks.
